Chronic Cystoisospora belli infection in a Colombian patient living with HIV and poor adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy

Cystoisospora belli is an intestinal Apicomplexan parasite associated with diarrheal illness and disseminated infections in humans, mainly immunocompromised individuals such as those living the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or acquired syndrome (AIDS). An irregular administration of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) HIV patients may increase risk opportunistic like cystoisosporiasis.We describe here a case C. infection Colombian patient chronic gastrointestinal poor adherence to HAART. His clinical parasitological cure was achieved trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole treatment. Although reduction number cases has been observed since use HAART, this still be considered differential diagnosis disease HIV/AIDS patients.Effective interventions enhancing HAART should included care programs.
